What if you could achieve more in less time? Most people would be interested I think. You can’t take away time from your day but focusing can help you supercharge the minutes that you have, without burning out your students. If a doctor says you are Vitamin deficient you are going to ask which vitamin? This is so you can supplement that shortage to bring it back to par. You may be getting some vitamin D, for example, but not enough to meet your body’s demands. In that case, you would focus on Vitamin D supplement to your diet or pills. It’s similar in our classroom planning.
If we want to see the most impact on our students, we must assess them to see the greatest need. After that, we must use our professional discernment to identify areas of focus. For example, a rote test can show handwriting needs work but we as teachers know that English Language Arts and Math must be weighter higher. The next question is, when do we teach these things? Those minutes should be seen as crucial. Those are the times we need to really pour on the creativity, with, candor, and endurance. Outside of those times are important too but it will foster a thicker covering of the crucial stuff when we are ready for it and when we know when it’s here. I have these times posted and I use post its to remind me when I will be in this “zone.” The brain likes chunks and if you as a teacher know where these crucial chunks of your learning day are, they are bound to be more effective.
